Technical SEO Guide: The Foundation That Makes Content Actually Rank

What Is Technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the infrastructure work that makes it possible for Google to find, crawl, understand, and rank your content. No matter how good your content is, if the technical foundation is broken, Google can't surface it.

In 2026, this matters beyond Google too. AI search engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity also crawl the web — and they respect the same technical signals.

The Technical SEO Checklist for 2026

1. Core Web Vitals

Google uses page experience as a ranking signal. The three metrics that matter:

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): How long it takes for the page's main content to load. Target: under 2.5 seconds.

INP (Interaction to Next Paint): How quickly the page responds to user interaction. Target: under 200ms.

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): How much the page layout shifts during loading — buttons and text jumping around as images load. Target: under 0.1.

2. Mobile-First Indexing

Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If your mobile experience is degraded — smaller content, missing elements, slower load — you're being ranked on an inferior version.

Check: Google Search Console → Mobile Usability report. Any errors here directly suppress rankings.

3. Crawlability

Googlebot needs to be able to access your pages. Common blockers:

  • robots.txt accidentally blocking important pages
  • noindex meta tags applied too broadly
  • Content behind login walls
  • Heavy JavaScript rendering (not all frameworks are equally crawlable)

Check yourdomain.com/robots.txt and verify it doesn't block /. In Google Search Console, the URL Inspection tool shows exactly what Googlebot sees when it visits any page.

4. HTTPS

In 2026 this is table stakes, but still worth verifying: every page should be served over HTTPS. Browsers show "Not Secure" on HTTP pages, Google treats it as a negative signal, and users bounce.

Verify: all internal links use https://, HTTP redirects to HTTPS, and there are no mixed-content warnings in the browser console.

5. URL Structure

Clean URLs help both users and Google:

  • Good: /services/seo/
  • Bad: /page?id=42&cat=3&ref=nav

Keep URLs lowercase, use hyphens (not underscores), avoid unnecessary parameters. For non-English sites: avoid special characters in URLs (accented letters, etc.) — they get percent-encoded and become unreadable.

6. Schema Markup

Schema is JSON-LD code that tells Google explicitly what your content is about. Benefits:

  • Rich results: Stars, prices, FAQ dropdowns in search results — higher click-through rates without ranking higher
  • AI citation probability: AI search engines favor schema-rich pages as sources
  • LocalBusiness schema: Essential for local businesses — signals your location, hours, services to both Google and AI engines

The most valuable schema types: LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Product, Article, BreadcrumbList.

7. XML Sitemap

A sitemap tells Google which pages you want indexed and signals their relative importance. Submit yours via Google Search Console.

Keep sitemaps clean — only include pages you want indexed. Avoid including URLs with noindex, redirect chains, or broken pages.

8. Internal Linking

Internal links distribute page authority across your site and signal to Google which pages matter most. Your highest-value service or product pages should have the most internal links pointing to them.

Every new blog post should link to at least one relevant service page. Every service page should link to related blog content. This creates a web of relevance signals.

9. Duplicate Content

The same content on multiple URLs confuses Google about which version to rank — and dilutes authority across both. Common causes:

  • HTTP and HTTPS versions both accessible
  • www and non-www both accessible
  • Filter/sort parameters creating duplicate category pages
  • Manufacturer product descriptions used verbatim

Fix with rel="canonical" tags or 301 redirects.

10. Broken Links (404 Errors)

Both outbound broken links and internal links to removed pages waste crawl budget and frustrate users. Google Search Console's Coverage report surfaces these. Fix by updating the link or adding a redirect.
