Schema Markup Guide: Structured Data for SEO and GEO

September 7, 2026

What Is Schema Markup?

Schema markup is structured data you add to your web pages that tells search engines — and AI systems — exactly what your content means. While your HTML is written for humans to read, schema is written for machines to read.

Using standards defined by Schema.org and delivered in JSON-LD format inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag, schema answers questions like: Is this a business or a person? Is this a product review or a blog post? Is this a frequently asked question or a legal notice?

Without schema: Google reads your page, guesses what it's about based on text. With schema: Google receives structured, unambiguous data — exactly what you are, where you are, what you offer, and what questions you answer.

Why Schema Matters in 2026

SEO: Rich Results

Correct schema enables your search result to show as a rich result rather than a plain blue link:

  • Star ratings (Review / AggregateRating schema)
  • FAQ dropdown accordions (FAQPage schema)
  • Price and availability (Product schema)
  • Event dates (Event schema)
  • Recipe cards (Recipe schema)

Rich results typically increase click-through rates by 20–30% compared to standard listings.

GEO: AI Citations

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview prefer structured data when generating answers. When someone asks "recommend a reliable SEO agency in Kayseri", AI systems choose sources that provide clear, schema-validated, consistent information.

Schema tells AI engines: "This information is reliable, verified, and original to this source." Unstructured sites — no matter how good their content — are less likely to be cited.

The Most Important Schema Types

LocalBusiness

The foundation for every local business site. Business name, address, phone, opening hours, GPS coordinates, and service types.

{
  "@type": "LocalBusiness",
  "name": "SGEO Digital",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "addressLocality": "Kayseri",
    "addressCountry": "TR"
  },
  "telephone": "+90-506-796-43-00",
  "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 09:00-18:00"
}

Critical: this information must match your Google Business Profile exactly. Inconsistencies weaken the trust signal for both Google and AI systems.

FAQPage

The single most effective schema type for GEO optimisation. It marks up question-and-answer pairs on the page, generating both Google FAQ rich results and strong AI citation signals.

{
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "How long does SEO take to show results?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "Depending on competition, the first measurable results typically appear within 3–6 months."
      }
    }
  ]
}

GEO rule: Add at least 3 question-and-answer pairs with FAQPage schema to every service page and blog article.

BlogPosting / Article

Marks up blog content. At minimum: headline, datePublished, author, and description.

Expanding the author field with Person schema (name, credentials, URL) strengthens E-E-A-T signals — especially important in YMYL categories like healthcare, law, and finance.

Product / Offer

For e-commerce product pages. Price, currency, stock status, and user ratings can appear in Google Shopping results and AI commerce responses when marked up correctly.

BreadcrumbList

Marks up page hierarchy. Makes readable breadcrumbs appear in search results instead of the raw URL, and helps search engines understand your site structure.

WebSite + SearchAction

If your site has internal search, this schema tells Google about the search endpoint. It can result in a search box appearing directly in your SERP listing.

Validation Tools

After adding schema, always test before deploying:

Tool What It Checks
Google Rich Results Test Whether schema qualifies for rich result display
Schema.org Validator Syntax errors and missing required fields
Google Search Console → Rich Results Live error monitoring and click data on deployed pages

Common Mistakes

Wrong @type. Using "Organization" instead of "LocalBusiness", or "Question" instead of "FAQPage" — each mistake prevents the schema from generating its intended effect.

Inconsistency with Google Business Profile. If your phone number on-site differs from GBP, AI systems see conflicting information and may reduce confidence in both sources.

Marking up content that doesn't exist. Adding Product reviews that aren't on the page, or FAQ items that aren't visible to users, is treated as manipulation by Google.

One JSON-LD block for everything. Multiple <script type="application/ld+json"> blocks on a single page work fine — you don't need to cram everything into one object.

Where to Start: Priority Order

  1. LocalBusiness — homepage, trust foundation for the whole site
  2. FAQPage — all service pages and blog articles
  3. BlogPosting — blog posts (author + publication date required)
  4. BreadcrumbList — sites with multiple navigation levels
  5. Product/Offer — e-commerce product pages

Schema adoption in Turkey remains low. Most local business sites have no structured data at all. A business that implements schema correctly — especially FAQPage across service pages — gains a compounding advantage in both search rankings and AI citation frequency that grows over time.
