How to Choose an SEO Agency in Turkey: Questions, Red Flags, and Realistic Expectations
July 21, 2026
Why Agency Selection Matters More Than You Think
SEO is a long-term investment. A good agency builds compounding organic traffic over 6–12 months. A bad one wastes that time and budget — and in the worst case, leaves your site with Google penalties that take months to recover from.
Turkey has a saturated SEO agency market. Dozens of agencies in every major city make similar promises. Here's how to separate the ones worth hiring from the ones to avoid.
5 Questions to Ask Before Signing
1. "Which specific keywords will you target and why?"
A vague answer: "We'll get you to the first page."
A good answer: Specific keywords, their monthly search volume, the competition level, and a rationale for why those keywords will bring customers — not just traffic.
If an agency can't give you a concrete keyword list before you sign, they're probably either inexperienced or planning to hit easy, low-competition terms that don't drive business.
2. "How will you build backlinks?"
Backlinks (links from other sites to yours) remain one of Google's strongest ranking signals. The two ends of the spectrum:
White-hat: Content creation, industry media outreach, directory listings, organic relationship building.
Black-hat: Buying links, link farms, mass-submission spam networks.
Turkish link-selling networks are common and widely used. Google detects them at scale. A manual penalty can remove your site from results entirely — and recovery takes months even after you fix the problem.
Ask specifically. "We build quality links" is not an answer.
3. "What does monthly reporting look like?"
You should receive concrete data every month: organic traffic changes, keyword ranking movements, technical improvements made, and next steps. A good agency treats reporting as accountability, not as a formality.
"We monitor results" is not a reporting process. Ask to see a sample report before committing.
4. "Can you share references I can contact?"
Not logos on a page — actual clients you can call or email. An agency that can't produce a reference from a client willing to speak with you is either new, or has a customer satisfaction problem.
5. "What happens in the first 90 days?"
The first three months should include concrete deliverables: technical audit and fixes, content strategy and initial publication, Google Search Console setup, schema implementation.
"SEO takes time, be patient" is accurate — but it's not an action plan. What specifically will they do while you wait?
Red Flags That Cost Businesses Money
Ranking guarantees. No agency can guarantee Google rankings. It violates Google's own guidelines and what they're usually promising is either black-hat manipulation or rankings for low-competition terms that don't matter commercially.
Prices that seem too low. Serious SEO work requires skilled people doing real work — content, technical fixes, link building, monitoring. Pricing that's significantly below market usually means automated tools or near-zero actual work.
No transparency on methods. If an agency is vague about how they'll do the work, they're often doing something they know you wouldn't approve of.
Ownership of your assets. Make sure your Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Google Business Profile, and website are owned by you — not the agency. Agencies that hold access to your accounts as leverage are a serious risk.
Lock-in contracts with no performance clauses. A 12-month lock-in with no performance benchmarks means you have no recourse if results don't materialize.
Local vs. Remote Agencies
Working with an agency based in Turkey (versus an international agency) has specific advantages:
- Understanding of Turkish search behavior and seasonal patterns
- Familiarity with Turkish directories, media outlets, and link sources
- Existing relationships with local Turkish media (useful for PR-driven link building)
- Time zone alignment for communication
But geography matters less than competence and transparency. A remote agency with clear processes and proven results beats a local agency with vague promises.
For businesses targeting both Turkish and international audiences, the ideal agency understands both markets — which is rare but worth seeking.
What Realistic Results Look Like
| Timeframe | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Month 1–2 | Technical audit complete, initial fixes deployed, baseline tracking in place |
| Month 3–4 | First content published, early ranking movement on lower-competition terms |
| Month 5–6 | Measurable organic traffic increase, target keywords entering top 20 |
| Month 9–12 | Stable rankings on primary terms, compounding traffic from content |
SEO is not a shortcut. Any agency promising significant results in 30 days is either misleading you or using tactics that will backfire.
GEO Optimization: The Differentiator to Ask About
Most Turkish SEO agencies focus exclusively on Google rankings. In 2026, that's only part of the picture.
AI search engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview — now handle a meaningful share of commercial queries. "What's the best web design agency in Kayseri?" asked to ChatGPT has an answer, and that answer doesn't come from keyword rankings alone.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of making your business the cited source in AI-generated answers. It requires schema markup, structured content, E-E-A-T signals, and authoritative citations — work that most Turkish agencies aren't doing yet.
If you're evaluating agencies, ask about GEO directly. The ones who know what it is and have a methodology for it are a generation ahead.
