E-Commerce SEO in Turkey: The Opportunity
Turkey's e-commerce market is growing fast. But most of the advice you'll find on e-commerce SEO is written for the US or UK market. Turkey has specific characteristics that change how you apply the fundamentals.
This guide is for businesses with Turkish e-commerce sites who want to grow organic traffic without relying entirely on paid ads or marketplace platforms like Trendyol and Hepsiburada.
The Turkish E-Commerce Search Landscape
Google dominates. 95%+ of Turkish searches go through Google. Optimize for Google first.
Mobile is primary. Turkish mobile internet usage is among the highest in Europe. If your checkout experience isn't excellent on mobile, your SEO traffic won't convert regardless of how well you rank.
Marketplaces are strong competitors, not replacement channels. Trendyol and Hepsiburada rank for most product queries. You can't out-SEO them on head terms — but you can win on specific, longer queries and local searches.
Category Pages: Where the Real Volume Lives
Most e-commerce SEO focus goes to product pages. But category pages are where broad search volume lives.
"Ahşap yemek masası" (wooden dining table) — category page. "Kayseri mobilya mağazası" (Kayseri furniture store) — landing page or category. "Model X123 sehpa" (specific product) — product page.
Category page checklist:
- Clean URL:
/mobilya/yemek-odalari/— hierarchical, no query strings - H1 that naturally includes the target keyword
- 150–200 words of introductory text — most competitors skip this and it's a free advantage
- Breadcrumb schema
- Control filter/sort URLs with canonical tags or noindex to prevent duplicate content explosion
Product Page Optimization
Each product page is a potential landing page for specific queries. The basics:
Title tag format: Brand + Model + Key Attribute + Category Keyword
Example: Ahşap Yemek Masası 120×80 cm | Kayseri Mobilya
Product descriptions: Never copy from the manufacturer. Duplicate descriptions are a ranking disadvantage — every competitor using the same manufacturer copy has the same content. Write original, useful descriptions of 150+ words.
Images:
- Filename:
ahsap-yemek-masasi-kayseri.jpg(descriptive, hyphens, no Turkish characters in filename) - Alt text: natural description including relevant keywords
- Use WebP format — 30% smaller than JPEG with same quality
URL: /urunler/ahsap-yemek-masasi-120x80/ — short, descriptive, no Turkish special characters (ş, ğ, ü cause encoding issues in URLs)
Product Schema: Rich Results
Product schema tells Google to show price, availability, and ratings directly in search results. This increases click-through rate significantly even without ranking higher.
{
"@type": "Product",
"name": "Ahşap Yemek Masası 120×80",
"offers": {
"@type": "Offer",
"price": "8500",
"priceCurrency": "TRY",
"availability": "https://schema.org/InStock"
},
"aggregateRating": {
"@type": "AggregateRating",
"ratingValue": "4.8",
"reviewCount": "24"
}
}
Schema is especially valuable in Turkey because relatively few local e-commerce sites implement it correctly — it's a real competitive advantage.
Technical Issues Specific to E-Commerce
Pagination: Large category pages create /sayfa/2/, /sayfa/3/ URLs. Without proper handling, Google wastes crawl budget on these. Use rel="next" / rel="prev" or ensure infinite scroll pages are crawlable.
Out-of-stock products: Don't delete product pages when items go out of stock. Keep them with an "out of stock" status or redirect to the most relevant in-stock alternative. Deleting loses any ranking signals the page had accumulated.
Site speed: Product images are heavy. Lazy loading, image compression, and a CDN are essential. Core Web Vitals directly affect rankings — this isn't optional.
Filters and sorting: If filters generate new URLs (color, size, price), you can quickly have thousands of near-duplicate pages. Use canonical tags or noindex on filtered pages.
Competing Against Trendyol and Hepsiburada
You won't beat them on generic category terms. But you can win on:
- Local searches: "Kayseri mobilya mağazası" — they don't have local relevance signals
- Specific long-tail queries: Product model numbers, specific configurations, niche categories
- Content: "Ahşap masa nasıl seçilir?" (how to choose a wooden table) — informational queries that lead into product discovery. Marketplaces don't do this.
- Trust signals: Original reviews, real photos, local delivery information — things a local business can do better than a national platform
GEO: AI Search for E-Commerce
AI search assistants are increasingly answering shopping questions. "What's the best furniture store in Kayseri?" or "How much does a custom kitchen cost in Turkey?" — these queries are being answered by ChatGPT and Perplexity, not just Google.
To get cited in AI answers:
- Add FAQ schema to category pages answering common buyer questions
- Write buying guides and comparison content
- Maintain an accurate, complete Google Business Profile
- Build consistent citations across Turkish directories
The bar for AI citations in Turkish e-commerce is low right now. Businesses that establish authority early will be the default sources in 2027 and beyond.
Payment and Trust Signals
Turkish online shoppers still have strong preferences around payment methods. Clearly showing:
- Kapıda ödeme (cash on delivery) availability
- Secure payment logos
- Return policy
- Real customer reviews in Turkish
...improves conversion rates, which in turn improves user engagement signals that support SEO rankings.
Where to Start
If you're not sure where to begin, run Google Search Console and identify:
- Which pages are already getting impressions but low clicks (low-hanging title/description improvements)
- Which category pages have no written content (add 150-word introductions)
- Whether Product schema is implemented on your product pages
These three areas almost always produce measurable results within 60–90 days.
