Core Web Vitals Guide: Google's Ranking Metrics Explained (2026)

September 7, 2026

What Are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are the three performance metrics Google uses to measure user experience — and they've been a direct ranking factor since 2021.

They don't just measure "speed." They measure loading performance, interactivity responsiveness, and visual stability separately. A page can load quickly but still deliver a poor user experience; Google now distinguishes between the two.

The Three Metrics

LCP — Largest Contentful Paint

What it measures: How long it takes for the largest visible content element — usually the main hero image or H1 heading — to render on screen.

Target: Under 2.5 seconds.

Common causes of poor LCP:

  • Large, unoptimised hero images
  • Slow server response time (high TTFB)
  • Render-blocking CSS or JavaScript
  • Resources not cached at the CDN level

How to fix it:

  • Compress your hero image to WebP and add loading="eager" + fetchpriority="high"
  • Use a CDN to serve content from a server geographically close to your users
  • Minify CSS and inline critical styles directly in the <head>

INP — Interaction to Next Paint

What it measures: The delay between a user interacting with the page (click, tap, keypress) and the browser visually responding. Replaced FID in 2024.

Target: Under 200 milliseconds.

Common causes of poor INP:

  • Long JavaScript tasks blocking the main thread
  • Poorly optimised third-party scripts (chat widgets, ad scripts, analytics)
  • Oversized JavaScript bundles

How to fix it:

  • Break long JavaScript tasks into smaller chunks using setTimeout or scheduler.yield()
  • Load third-party scripts with async or defer
  • Audit and remove scripts that aren't earning their performance cost

CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift

What it measures: How much the visible page elements shift around while loading — the frustrating experience of content jumping as you're about to click something.

Target: Under 0.1.

Common causes of poor CLS:

  • Images without explicit width and height attributes (the browser doesn't reserve space)
  • Late-loading ads and embeds that push content down
  • Web fonts rendering late (FOUT/FOIT)

How to fix it:

  • Add width and height attributes to every <img> tag
  • Reserve minimum dimensions for ad slots and embeds
  • Use font-display: swap and preload critical fonts

Measuring With PageSpeed Insights

Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool shows both lab data (simulated) and field data (real user measurements from the Chrome User Experience Report — CrUX).

Important distinction: Lab scores can look good while field data is poor. Real users visit on a range of devices and network conditions. For ranking decisions, Google uses field data (28-day averages) — not lab scores.

Always test mobile and desktop separately. Mobile scores are almost always lower — mobile networks are slower and device processors have less power than the desktop machines you test on.

Tracking in Google Search Console

Google Search Console → Core Web Vitals report shows which pages on your site are rated "Poor" or "Needs Improvement" at the URL level.

Use it to:

  • Identify failing URLs and group them by issue type (LCP problem vs CLS problem)
  • Prioritise fixes by traffic impact — a slow high-traffic page matters more than a slow page no one visits
  • Request re-validation after fixing — Google will re-crawl and update the status

Core Web Vitals and GEO

AI search engine crawlers also evaluate page performance. A slow or visually unstable page may not be fully processed by AI systems — reducing the chance of appearing as a cited source in AI Overview, ChatGPT, or Perplexity responses.

A page with strong Core Web Vitals:

  • Ranks higher on Google
  • Gets crawled more completely by AI systems
  • Has a higher chance of being cited in AI search responses

Technical performance is now the shared foundation of both SEO and GEO — not just a speed metric.

Quick Reference

Metric Target Most Common Issue First Fix
LCP < 2.5s Large hero image WebP + fetchpriority="high"
INP < 200ms Heavy JavaScript async/defer third-party scripts
CLS < 0.1 Images without dimensions Add width + height to all <img>
